What is Palliative Care?

Palliative Care is provided to improve the quality of life of patients with serious and incurable illnesses. Care addresses the management of symptoms as well as the psychological, social and spiritual needs of the patient.

Will I Have To Pay?

There are no fees or charges for this specialised care.

If I come into the In-Patient Unit, am I able to go home again?

Yes - this is your choice.

What happens if I cannot manage at home?

We will help to enhance your homecare or we will help you and your family to explore alternatives.

What happens if I have to go to a rest home?

If you move to a rest home the Community Team will continue to visit you and remain in contact with your family.

How long can I stay in the In-Patient Unit?

Although we are a short-stay unit and we only have six beds, there is no set time limit. Decisions regarding discharge home or to a rest home are made with you and your family.

Is hospice for cancer patients only?

No - we can offer support for patients with any incurable illness - we only need a referral.

Is hospice the Cancer Society?

No - we are separate organisations providing different and complementary services.
