Furniture shop opens

22 March 2023Yarrow 2nd shop sunny 3

Hospice Southland has opened a furniture shop in Invercargill, right next door to its main shop in Yarrow Street.

Formerly Colour Plus, customers were welcomed into the new shop at 123 Yarrow Street on March 21.

The spacious new premise complements the hospice shop at 117 Yarrow St that opened in 2011. It is stocked full of furniture, tools, sporting goods, fabrics and drapes.

Shop manager Debbie Finnerty, who oversees both shops, says hospice supporters have been very generous with donations of furniture in recent times and they needed more floor space to show the beds, tables and sofas plus some other goods.

The new premise brings to eight the number of hospice shops in Southland and the Wakatipu basin – four in Invercargill. Another new shop was opened at 113 North Road in Waikiwi on February 15.

The opening of the new shops reflects a growing public demand for second hand goods. The retail shops contributed $2.2 million to hospice’s revenues last year, providing a much-needed boost with government funding covering only 42% of operating costs.

Sunflower fundraiser

15 March 2023sunflowers and sky

Sunflowers just make a day brighter, even more so when a grower uses them as a way of donating to hospice.

Invercargill resident Mairi Revitt shared her beautiful sunflower patch with an adoring public last Sunday raising $422.70 by charging people $2 for a photo with them and selling them a sunflower for $1.

What a ray of sunshine you are, Mairi! Many thanks for thinking of us this novel way. 🌻🌻🌻

And thank you Keegan Langeveld, a friend of Mairi's, for spreading the word on Facebook.

Hospice Street Appeal

7 March 2023Street Appeal 2023 - Lynda Kennedy, Sth City New World

A huge thank you to all those who donated and collected for the annual Hospice Southland Street Appeal on February 10.

The final total came to just over $26,000 from 28 sites throughout Southland and the Wakatipu Basin. These funds help to enable us to offer palliative care to those in our community free of charge.

More than 100 volunteers generously gave of their time throughout the day to collect for us. Thank you all for your continued support and commitment to help us, we couldn’t do it without you.

Thank you also to the Southland Times, Media Works, NZME and Radio Southland for their help with promoting this year's appeal.

Once again, a very heart felt thank you to you, our wonderful community.

You don’t need to be rich to make a difference. Many of us wish we could give back to the community, but we often just don’t have the means. That’s why we have our wish list! Big or small, your contribution counts.

By donating everyday food and household items, you help us reduce our costs and keep hospice’s palliative care free 24/7 to patients and support their families.

We currently need:

• Butter 500gm •  sugar 1.5kg • serviettes (patterned) • coffee (Nescafe/Greggs) • fruit juice 1L • Sprite, Fanta, Coca Cola, Schweppes cans 250ml • ginger beer • cheese • eggs • laundry powder • laundry bleach • Vanish whitener •

Please drop them off to our base at 75 Kew Rd, Invercargill (behind Southland Hospital).
