We are very pleased to announce The Amigos cycling team has raised $5110 for hospice.

That’s an awesome result despite the annual Rotary Cycle Challenge being cancelled for 2022 by the organisers due to Covid.

The five riders – (from left) Callum Chilton, Maurice Allingham, Ross Sutherland, Aaron Galloway and Darryl Greig pictured with hospice events coordinator Suzanne Prentice – decided they still wanted do it, so made their own way from Te Anau to Invercargill on March 19.

They were supported by family and friends along the 160km route. It was also a personal challenge for Aaron as he rode in memory of his mother-in-law Mary Peters, who died from cancer two years ago and was cared for by hospice.

Thanks so much for your commitment to the hospice cause and making it happen, guys!

Missing loan equipment

22 February 2022

Calling all commodes: please return to hospice.commode + cobweb s

We are getting low on loan equipment, including commodes (toilet chairs).

We know some patients who stayed in our IPU took them home to use and their families have probably just forgotten to return them, but we need them back ASAP.

The missing equipment includes commodes, low walking frames, shower stools, ramps and wheelchairs.

Please drop them back to our offices in Kew Rd, Invercargill (behind the hospital) or call us on (03) 211 3081 and we’ll pop round and pick them up.

Grief support initiatives

10 February 2022

Hgrieving-desperate-4941734_1920ospice Southland has announced two new initiatives to support people going through a bereavement.

The first initiative is The Journey with Grief programme for family members who have experienced a bereavement in the past year.

This is a seven-week programme to help people understand more about grief, how it affects them and coping strategies to support them on this journey. This is most suitable for family members four to seven months after their bereavement.

The programme will run weekly on Thursdays from 10am to 12 noon starting February 24 until April 7 at hospice’s base in Kew Rd, Invercargill. A second program will run from July 7 to August 18.

The second initiative is a Kowhai Coffee Morning group to provide a space and time for grieving family members to share their experiences. “This is ideal for newly bereaved families to meet with like-minded people and learn more about the support available through hospice,” says Patient and Family Support Team leader Ros Harrington.

This will be held monthly on the first Tuesday starting March 1 from 10am to 11am also at our Kew Rd base. Feel free to come along, no cost.

For more information, phone Ros on (03) 211 3081, or email her at ros.harrington@hospicesouthland.org.nz.

You don’t need to be rich to make a difference. Many of us wish we could give back to the community, but we often just don’t have the means. That’s why we have our wish list! Big or small, your contribution counts.

By donating everyday food and household items, you help us reduce our costs and keep hospice’s palliative care free 24/7 to patients and support their families.

We currently need: Dishwash liquid, 1L fruit juice, 250ml cans of lemonade/ginger beer/coke, toilet paper.
